Benefits of Cord Blood:
• Children with heart defects may someday receive perfectly-matched new heart valves built using stem cells from their umbilical cord blood
• Cord Blood is still recommended for use in transplantation performed every year for diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and many solid tumors.
• According to current scientific data, cord blood cells that have been stored for fifteen years have the same composition as they did at the time of storage.
• Cord blood is a source of stem cells which is the main source of blood cells.
• It generates and satisfies the blood cell requirements of a human body.
• It can be used for transfusion in case of disease, such as leukemia, lymphoma, or other blood based diseases.
Cord blood is a collection of various cell types like hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and embryonic-like stem cells (ESC). It is considered as a waste material that is routinely discarded after birth and collecting it does not alter normal birthing procedures. The collection is easy and safe for mother and baby and causes no pain. But now with the help of cord blood banking, families are allowed to save this valuable resource for future medical use. This is something that can save the life of your baby, yet many times it ends up just getting thrown away.

We banked our son's cord blood. At first my husband didn't want to due to the expense, but this was one area I wasn't willing to compromise on. We are just starting to learn what illnesses can be cured. Imagine 10-20 years down the line. It may cure diseases even into adulthood. I strongly encourage banking your child's cord blood. If you absolutely can't afford to do that, I'd recommend donating it. Totally free and might save a life or give a better quality of life to someone else's child.
