    Hi Sandy,

Stretch marks are common during pregnancy from the 5th month onwards. Stretch marks affect 50 to 90 % of Pregnant women. The majority of Stretch marks appear on a women's abdomen from the 6th month onwards when her belly is rapidly expanding to accommodate the growing baby and her skin is stretched to its limit.

Some women also get them on their hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms and breasts. When the skin and underlying tissue pull and stretch beyond their ability, the skin actually rips and tears. The tiny tears heal soon resulting in scar tissue. Stretch marks appear as small red, pink, purple or dark brown streaks in the skin

You can prevent stretch marks to an extent by keeping your skin soft by moisturising it frequently. Also keeping your weight in check also helps. though you may gain weight during pregnancy, dont get over weight as it compounds to the problem. Eat lot of fruits, green vegetables that have fibre content as the baby also needs enough nourishment.

    dear sandy!
avoid rubbing your stomach with nails if you are suffering from itching, which is very common during pregnancy. you can use your palms gently on the effected area inspite of nails. this can lessen the strech marks.

    best of luck (Y)
